Metaphor in poetry of the "metaphysical poet" Bian Zhilin

Thesis abstract The main aim of this thesis is the analysis of Bian Zhilin's metaphors in his early collections Fish Eyes (Yumu ji 鱼目集) and Leaves of Three Autumns (Sanqiu cao 三秋草). On the basis of this analysis we try to answer some questions - to what extent the Bian Zhilin's imagery relates to the hypothesis about the creativity of modern metaphors, whether there is an analogy with the metaphors in French symbolist's pieces. We will also focus on correspondences and differences between Bian Zhilin's metaphors and metaphor in traditional Chinese poetry. In the second chapter we deal with the Bian Zhilin's life which in some aspects marks his future work and we are engaged in the historical background of his life, too. Above all we focus on the development of literature. The approaches to metaphors, which are used in the fourth analytical part, are analysed in the third chapter. The fourth chapter is the core of this essay and it contains five subsections. On the basis of the cited poems and their translations we strive to characterise individual topics (personal and general symbols, synesthesia, personification, sources of imagery and the relation between the tenor and vehicle of the metaphor) and relate this analysis to the initial hypothesis about the creativity of modern metaphors and the presumption...
